In California, dating back to its creation in 1868, the California Department of Insurance has also had a mission that ensures that consumers are protected; that the insurance marketplace is fostered to be vibrant and stable; that the regulatory process is maintained as open and equitable;and that the law is enforced fairly and impartially.
California Insurance Commissioner
Currently the Commissioner in charge of The California Department of Insurance is Steve Poizner. Steve was elected as the Commissioner on November 7, 2006 and took the Oath of Office on January 8, 2007. Steve got his undergraduate at the University of Texas at Austin, and his masters at Standford University. Steve has had a very suscessful career, founding several technology companies and leading the way in multiple industries. He is also thought of by his peers as "independent" (Modesto Bee), "a man of integrity" (LA Times), someone with "an impressive command of the issues" (SD Union Tribune) and having a "reformist bent" (Sacramento Bee).
California Annuity Resources
The CDI is in charge of licensing and regulating the rates and practices of all insurance companies, agents, and brokers in California. Currently California has about 1500 insurance agencies and over 340,000 individual agents. The department also has a wide range of resources readily available to consumers that have any questions at all. The CDI hotline number is 800-927-HELP (4357) and they provide callers and consumers with immediate help relating to current information on insurance issues. They also have a Request for Assistance form (RFA) that can be filled out whenever anyone needs additional information and help, or needs to open a complaint investigation. On top of that, the CDI publishes free brochures that are readiliy available to anyone who calls the hotline. The CDI website also provides immediate access to a wealth of insurance information including regulations governing the insurance industry and a complete copy of the California Insurance Code.
