The Indiana Department of Insurance works to protects citizens of the state when they purchase insurance products. The department assists consumers in understanding how their policies work. The other primary responsibility of the department is to ensure the financial solvency of insurance companies doing business within the state. The department also ensures that insurance companies honor the legal and binding contracts they issue.
Indiana Insurance Commissioner
In June of 2010, Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels appointed Stephen Robertson as the Commissioner of the Department of Insurance. Mr. Robertson, whose previous post was that of executive director, replaced Carol Cutter, who died in May. Mr. Robertson began working at the Department of Insurance in 2008 as Director of the Title Insurance Division. He was later the Deputy Commissioner of the Title and Bail Bond Division. In this position he was responsible for making sure that the 41 insurance companies and 800 insurance agencies were in compliance with all Indiana insurance laws. Mr. Robertson is a member of both the Indiana and Nebraska State Bar Associations and the American Bar Association.
