In 1889 the Office of the Insurance Commissioner was created by the first state legislature but it wasn't until 1907 when the office became a separate agency that the people of Washington would elect their first insurance commissioner. In Washington. commissioners are elected every four years and right now the state is on its 8th commissioner. Unlike most state agencies, Washington is not funded by public tax dollars. Insurance companies are required to pay an administrative fee to cover all costs of the department.
